FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Brussels, 29/11/17

The Industry committee of the European Parliament voted yesterday to exclude renewable energy subsidies for incineration of mixed municipal waste. If the amendment is adopted in the plenary, Member States will have to phase out financial support to waste-to-energy by 2021.

Janek Vahk, Development and Policy Coordinator at Zero Waste Europe, said “The Industry committee has reiterated the Parliament’s commitment to align the Commission’s Renewable Energy proposal with the EU Waste and Circular Economy polices. Now it’s up to the Plenary of the Parliament to follow up on this commitment”.

The Industry committee adopted the Environment committee amendment 88 “By way of derogation from paragraph 1 of this Article, Member States shall ensure that no support scheme for energy from renewable sources is provided for municipal waste which does not comply with the separate collection obligations set out in Directive 2008/98/EC.”
2. The European Parliament in plenary will vote on this file in the week of 15 January 2018.
